But...can they do over 280,000 miles on their original rings and pistons and still burn no oil over 5000 miles of hard use?
Seriously, 8 quarts in, 8 quarts out. No leaks, no drips, nothing burned, and the oil still looks in pretty decent shape (I mean, as far as you can tell looking at oil.) There is something to be said for an overbuilt, under-stressed engine.

impressive - what kind of oil are you using?

My S600 takes 9.5 quarts. Its environmental regicide.

Gotta love overbuilt Toyota mills...

No, they can’t do 280k miles. Most won’t even make 180k miles.

My RX330 with 217,000 miles on it doesn’t burn any oil at all either. It’s on the original rings and pistons, too. There’s something to be said about Toyota engines!

That IS something given that the mz motors are known for bad valve guide seals and engine slurge (source owned a highlander with bad valve guides). Other than that they are pretty tough.

Are all the non turbo mini engines the same 1.6L? I’ve done a bunch of research on the S, but just last night I was thinking about the base engine and how much fun that’d be; any insight on that?

Mean while my 2013 Subaru is gobbling a quart every 2000 miles. Just to confirm it’s a 4 stroke not a 2 stroke engine.

Their transmissions seem to enjoy shitting the bed way, way before that.

Headgaskets too

Huh, now that you said it, I do think I remember reading about those issues somewhere. I didn’t realize how bad it was, though. I guess changing the oil every 3,000 miles probably helps avoid the sludge in my case.
But, to be fair, nothing is tougher than a Land Cruiser!

The MZ is a good motor, but Toyota went through a rough patch with seals for a while, my rav4 also had bad valve guides.

Yeah, I definitely didn’t know that! I would think that has something to do with the RAV4 we just got rid of burning oil, too.
